What is a Marriage & Family Therapist?
A licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) is a relationship specialist who helps couples and families reduce conflict and achieve more satisfying relationships. Marriage and family therapy is rooted in the idea that mental illness and family problems are best treated in a family context. Trained in psychotherapy and family systems, LMFTs focus on understanding clients’ symptoms and interaction patterns within the family environment. An LMFT has a minimum of a master’s degree and two years of clinical experience. LMFTs can independently diagnose and treat clients with mental health and substance abuse issues.
